Aluminum vs. Stainless Steel

Aluminum vs. Stainless Steel

The definitive comparison. Aluminum is cheap and sacrificial. Stainless is expensive but offers superior performance and durability. Which do you need?

The Great Debate

Choosing between Aluminum and Stainless Steel is the most common question we get. The answer depends on your budget, your hull, and where you boat.

Aluminum: The Budget Choice

  • Pros: Inexpensive ($150-$250). Sacrificial—it breaks before your drive shaft does.
  • Cons: Flexes under load (poor performance). Blades are thick (drag). corrodes easily.
  • Best For: Small outboards, rocky rivers (where you expect to hit), and spare props.

Stainless Steel: The Performance Choice

  • Pros: 5x stronger than Al. Thinner blades = less drag = more speed. Zero flex = better hole shot.
  • Cons: Expensive ($500+). If you hit a rock hard, the shock goes to the gears (though modern hubs help prevent this).
  • Best For: Bass boats, heavy cruisers, and anyone wanting maximum fuel economy and speed.
